The UN and the Assault on Israel’s Legitimacy: Implications for the Roadmap

The roadmap has significant roots in the UN, an organization long understood as biased against Israeli interests and Jewish well-being in general. Examples include the work of the UN "Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories," established in 1968, and the UN "Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People," created in 1975.

U.S. Middle East Policy and Iran’s Politico-Economic Development

Iran has enjoyed a substantial windfall from oil prices, which has more than matched its additional budgetary expenses and has enabled it to establish a special “fund for future generations.” As far as the Pentagon is concerned, there is hardly any difference between the radical Iranian clergy who control Iran’s policy and President Muhammad Khatami’s “so-called reformist government.”

Prisoner Release – Veering Off the Roadmap

The first sentence of Phase I of the roadmap is crystal clear, demanding that "the Palestinians immediately undertake an unconditional cessation of violence." The roadmap’s cease-fire is not contingent upon Israeli performance on any other issue. Any linkage between the question of Palestinian violence and Israeli implementation of the roadmap makes violence part of the negotiating process.

Iraq – A Source of Oil or a Quagmire for the U.S.?

In an interview in Jordan on June 21, Iraq’s acting oil minister, Thamir al-Ghadhban, said, "Restoration of the [Iraqi] oil industry will take some time, at least a year and a half." Currently, Iraq is producing about 500,000 barrels per day (b/d) from the old northern fields (Kirkuk) and only 300,000 b/d from the enormously rich southern (largely Rumeila) fields.

Anti-Semitism and Terrorism on the Internet: New Threats

The shared hatred of Jews encourages individuals and movements to overcome great differences in their worldviews. Alliances and coalitions are created virtually on the Internet, which is speeding up the connections of the Jews’ enemies. To date there is no organized response to the "Internet Front" from those who are combating terrorism.

Defensible Borders for Israel

The quest for defensible borders has been an axiom of Israeli governments since 1967 on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 242. Defensible borders for Israel has been explicitly backed by Washington since the Reagan administration. In Rabin’s last Knesset address he made clear that Israel "will not return to the 4 June 1967 lines."

Towards Aqaba: Challenges Facing Israel

There are five dimensions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, all taking place simultaneously: the military activity on the ground; the narrative; the legitimacy of the tactics, methods, and means; the legitimacy of the leadership; and the capabilities of both societies to sustain the conflict.

Monitoring the Political Role of NGOs

One of the harshest fronts of the Arab-Israeli conflict is the information war, in which powerful non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with major influence on the international media consistently display a biased approach. The hijacking of the Durban anti-racism conference in 2001 by anti-Israel NGOs illustrated the dangers of politically motivated humanitarian groups that derive credibility simply on the basis of mission statements promoting "universal human rights."

Torah is their Trade

In Israel today, the haredi world continues to condemn any recommendations to integrate into the army or the workforce and thus leave their religious studies. The non-haredi community, on the other hand, bears the brunt of military and reserve duty. This essay attempts to show that a balance between study and work values stands at the core of classic Jewish thought, and that it would be to the benefit of the haridim to become integrated into the broader Israeli society through military duty and assimilation into the workforce.

The Global Epidemic of Illegal Building and Demolitions: Implications for Jerusalem

In recent decades, municipalities and governments in all parts of the world have struggled with illegal building. However, compared with the incessant denunciation of rather infrequent demolitions by the Jerusalem Municipality, there has been nearly a complete lack of publicity when other governments demolish illegal structures.

The Suicide Bombing Attacks in Saudi Arabia: A Preliminary Assessment

The suicide bombings in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, that left dozens dead – including 7-10 U.S. citizens – should not have come as a surprise. There has been increasing evidence that al-Qaeda, which took credit for the attack, has viewed the Saudi kingdom as one of its main areas of refuge since the U.S. victory against the Taliban in Afghanistan, for a number of reasons:

What Can We Learn from the Palestine Investment Fund Report?

According to a 345-page report prepared by Standard & Poor’s and the Democracy Council, the Palestinian Authority has approximately $600 million invested in 79 commercial ventures worldwide. The report fails to address other monies controlled by the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization.
